Picked up a tip tonight off of a Youtube video comment that seemed like a great idea for a newbie...

He mentioned that he tries to pick a powder that requires a large load so that the shell is mostly filled and a double charge would immediately be noticeable. My initial reaction was I'm now paying $22 a pound for most powders and with the larger recipes I'd use it up a lot more quickly. Now I'm thinking being new at this it might be a great idea to be safer until I get my legs completely.

Any comments on that strategy?

Some shells you can do that with the right powder, I do that in my 9mm, using Bullseye.
It is kind of hard in a .45 ACP, Bullseye, ACC # 2, W-231 just does not fill the .45 like the 9mm, it would take a triple charge, to fill over.
.38 is the same way, A little dab will do you.
