If your air conditioner stops cooling you need to check a few things before you call for service.

1. Is the fan on the inside working? If it's not working you need to make sure the furnace isn't either shut off inadvertantly, tripped breaker, blower door has fallen off or isn't closed completely (there's a safety switch that will shut the unit down completely when the door isn't completely closed) or worse yet the inside isn't working but the outside is and you're creating a huge iceberg inside the ductwork above your furnace because your blower is out. (This will also take your compressor out if it runs like this for any time. You need a professional quick.)
2. If the fan on the inside is working but isn't cooling you need to go outside to see if the outside is running.
3. If you get outside and you hear a buzzing but the fan isn't turning you can pretty well assume the compressor isn't running at least any longer. It will overheat within seconds and shut down with no fan. The buzzing you hear is only the contactor which is run by the 24 volts the inside thermostat is sending to it to control the higher voltage present outside. If you've checked the breakers and made sure there is no fuse or another breaker that needs to be reset on the outside it is time to call for service. You need to have technical knowledge at this point.
