Knock Out Attacks

This has been in the news again recently in St. Louis and I wanted to get opinions from folks about it. Over the last 18 months or so, groups of teens have been "randomly" attacking people as part of a "game". In the first article, it states that the attackers were four teenagers and that they approached within clear view. Clearly, disparity of force is in play here.

In the latest attack, seven teenagers were arrested.

Using this as a scenario for yourself, how would you have handled it? I know that I should be aware of my surroundings at all times, but it sounds like the latest attack came without warning and from behind. In class, it was stated that 3 or more attackers qualifies for disparity of force. What if there is only one attacker but he is part of a larger group? My first option would be to get the heck out of there if I see a group of teenagers loitering or up to no good. However, with a group it might be impossible to get away. What are your opinions/how would you handle the situation? The teens didn't appear to have any weapons except for their hands. How does that factor into your decision-making process?

Two or more would be a disparity of force. One attacker that is part of a larger group = a group of attackers. Again, a disparity.
Hit from behind without warning wouldn't seem to have any use of force solutions, only tactical awareness and avoidance ones.
